WHY ARE WE AT YOUR DOOR? - It’s petition season
There is so much that goes on behind the scenes to create this great Democracy/Republic. Step one of our electoral process is collecting petition signatures of community members of specific political parties to get candidates on the ballot for election on the party line.
A political candidate has to collect 5% of party membership in their geographic area to qualify for the party line on the election day ballot. A candidate will often get twice the number of signatures required in case they are challenged. If there are no other candidates, and their petitions are in good order, they will appear on the November election ballot on that party line.
If there is more than one candidate who collects the required signatures, there will be a primary in June to determine which candidate the voters want to represent their political party on the ballot in November.
So, if you get a knock on the door in March to sign candidates’ ballots - please know you are playing a very important role in our democratic process by signing candidates’ petitions. We thank you for your patriotism in taking a few minutes to sign those petitions and participating to keep our democracy strong.
